FIRST
EVER INTERNATIONAL CAMOGIE COMPETITION
Miriam
O’Callaghan, Uachtarán Cumann Camógaíochta
na nGael, announced details today in Croke Park of the inaugural
Coca Cola sponsored International Camogie Competition which
takes place in October. Teams from North America, Britain,
mainland Europe and Ireland will arrive in Dublin on Wednesday
October 13th to play a round robin competition. The Coca Cola
International Camogie Final will be played in Croke Park as
the curtain raiser to the first International Rules Game on
Sunday October 17th.
This
is a major breakthrough for Cumann Camógaíochta
na nGael. The Irish team will be drawn from the Purcell Cup
Combined Third Level Colleges team named earlier this year.
The team will be captained by Therese Maher, Athlone IT and
Galway senior inter-county star. Earlier this year, Therese
was awarded the Player of the Tournament for the Purcell Cup.
Former
Tipperary hurling star, Michael Cleary, has been named as
the manager of the Irish team. Michael managed the Tipperary
Camogie team to Senior All-Ireland success on three consecutive
years, beginning in 1999. Camillus King, Anne Dolan, Rita
Broderick and Michelle Davis will join Michael as team selectors.
Speaking
in Croke Park, Uachtarán Cumann Camógaíochta
na nGael, Miriam O' Callaghan expressed her delight; "
this is a unique step for us, we are delighted to have an
International dimension to our games particularly in this
our centenary year. We are very grateful to Seán Ó
Ceallaigh and the GAA for their generous grant towards this
event and also to Coca Cola Bottlers Ireland who have joined
us as official sponsors of the event. We will be hoping to
develop the International dimension to Camogie over the coming
years".
Also in attendance was Mo Durkan, Public Affairs and Communications
Manager for Coca -Cola Bottlers Ireland who stated "we
are delighted to be supporting this unique and exciting initiative
with Cumann Camógaíochta na nGael in this their
centenary year. In addition to providing an international
dimension to the game, the sponsorship builds on the long-standing
relationship Coca -Cola Bottlers has enjoyed for many years
with the Camogie Association, through the Féile na
nGael under -14 hurling and camogie finals."
