CORK COUNTY FINAL |
Carrigaline
won the U16 Twelve a Side Camogie Cork County Championship title
with a hard earned victory over Blarney in a highly entertaining
game at Ballyanley on Monday last 01st November 2004. The only
camogie owned pitch in the county, which was opened during the
summer, is sand based and the grass had a mid-summer look about
it on the day.
Carrigaline lined out minus the services of Maria Moran (injured)
and with 4 under 13 players and 6 on the age, we had a nice
combination of experience and youthful skill. Blarney goaled
early on, from a ball that came close to the end line, was pulled
back across the goal and lashed into the far corner of the net.
This looked ominous as Blarney had some big wins on their way
to the final and we thought we were in for more of the same.
Shortly after this however, Una O'Farrell equalised with a well
taken goal taken after she had rounded the full back. Blarney
scored a point from a free to put them back in front.
Then Katie Doherty thundered in to the game, soloed up the centre
and palmed the ball past the keeper to put Carrig back in front.
It was end to end stuff with Carrig having more penetration
up front. There were many goalmouth incidents mostly in the
Carrig defence, with Blarney unlucky with their shooting. Sarah
O'Keeffe's puck-outs began to find Emma Gallagher with space
on the right wing and her pace was creating opportunities for
our forwards up front. Katie Doherty pointed from a 30 meter
free. Just before the break Una O'Farrell kicked the ball into
the corner of the net to give us a lead of 3-1 to 1-1.
We turned to face the gentle hill but with the slight breeze
now behind us. The early pressure came from Blarney but it was
Carrig who scored first with another pointed Katie Doherty free.
Our girls were now playing in a counter attacking style, under
constant pressure at the back but with a lot of space up front
when they did manage to get the ball up the field and most of
this came from Sarah O'Keeffe's long puck outs. Blarney were
awarded a free and pointed to make it 3-2 to 1-2. Then the first
turning point of the game came when Katie went all the way to
the Blarney net. Our joy was short lived as Blarney came back
with renewed vigour and were justly rewarded with a second goal
with about 10 minutes remaining.
The fat was truly in the fire at this stage and our defence
was beginning to crack but the final turning point of the game
came with 4 minutes remaining when another Katie Doherty shot
from far out dipped just below the bar at the last second to
give Carrig a 3 goal lead at 5-2 to 2-2. Carrig completed the
remaining minutes with 3 pointed Katie Doherty frees and one
from Sarah O'Keeffe. The game was a personal triumph for Katie
who scored 3-5 in total and thus fulfilled the promise of many
other days. This was easily Carrig’s best game of the
season, with a much improved performance from the semi-final
win over Na Piarsaigh.
Vicky O'Grady, Donna Smyth and Grainne O'Keeffe played a stormer
in midfield contesting every possession hotspot and doing a
pile of blocking and hooking. Sarah O'Keeffe at full back got
in some lengthy clearances. The half back line of Deirdre O'Leary,
Hilary Egan & Sarah Cotter marked their players closely
and were under constant pressure. Maura McInerney was the find
of the season. She played centre forward and kept the centre
back from making lengthy clearances and held up the ball for
the forwards. With Katie Doherty & Emma Gallagher well out
on both wings they had the space to do some fabulous running
& striking. Una O'Farrell played the full forwards role
well winning a lot of ball, carrying and blocking and got 2
vital early goals.
Aisling Madden of Blarney was awarded player of the game award.
